A Street in Milano

On the centennial of her death in 1899, the Italian cities of Milan, Monza and Masciago chose to remember Agnesi by naming streets in her honor. This photograph was taken in Milan, Italy.  A street map indicates Via Agnesi is not far from Via Beethoven and Via Bach.

Italians are justifiably proud of their outstanding contributions to science and mathematics.  In the 18th century Agnesi joined earlier famous names, e.g., Fibonacci, Galileo, da Vinci, Tartaglia, Cardan and Bombelli, in making outstanding, world class advances.  However, Agnesi is the first women in Western Civilization to publish a mathematical work that has survived.  Earlier women may have written treatises.  Certainly other women, e.g., Hypatia, studied and enjoyed mathematics, but their publications, if any, have not survived, or have yet to be discovered.
